Impression of Cape Scott
Cape Scott Provincial Park Extraordinaire,
Northern tip of Vancouver Island.
I have spent many, many solitary hours over the years hiking through the 28+ kilometres of knee-deep, mud filled swamp...trail(?)...to the coast. My quest?...some of the most magnificent white sandy beaches in the world, an awesome surf, wonderful sounds and smells of the sea...and Pacific Ocean as far as you can see. All delightfully accentuated by that incredible feeling of being able to fly when my backpack finally comes off. And if I am blessed and the gods like me at the time, the most rarest of rare north island phenomenon...the sun is shining. The last time I camped at Nissen Bight (1993), I stayed six days and there were only two other people on the kilometre long beach. Sometimes just me.
The top of Mount St. Patrick has got to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I truly believe that all the bonsai trees in the world that have died reincarnate on the top of that mountain. The first time I hiked to the top it was shrouded in sea fog but the beauty and majesty of the bonsai pine and cedar enraptured me for hours. After a time, the gods did smile...and I was further rewarded with the sun melting the mist, dissipating to open up the most magnificent, unobstructed 360 degree view of the world from my mountain aerie.
Wondrous memories, I would love to go back and see it again...feel it again...share it with someone special. Quite often when I meditate now, I go there first to rekindle the magic...the serenity...the awesome feeling of oneness I had with nature. Time has not dimmed my enchantment of that day.
